Angelina Jolie … enough already
Vanity Fair’s online poll for most beautiful woman finished up today with Angelina Jolie winning by a landslide. She’s won this award before and is an obvious answer for this contest, but I just don’t get it. What is the obsession with her? It seems like most guys I know agree that she ranks highly on the Hollywood most-hot list, and yes, she is by popular-consensus attractive and talented and skinny, but those are the requirements to be a female resident of Hollywood. So, really, come on.
Let’s just get it out of the way and say that I don’t think Angelina – with her stick-thin arms and funky facial structure – is that attractive. And yeah, she won an Oscar, but she’s garnered more celebrity for her high-profile relationships and adoption than for her acting talents. It also seems the public memory is way too short. It was really not that long ago that Angelina was marrying Billy Bob Thornton with a vial of his blood around her neck. And she was the crazy lady adopting kids from all over the world. She was Lara Croft, with rumors of puffed-up lips. She was the sexaholic seducing Brad Pitt away from his drop-dead gorgeous wife.
Now it’s 2009, and she’s been chosen world’s most beautiful woman by over 50% of the voters. Looking through the other nominees, it doesn’t seem like the options were that great. Contestants like Gisele Bundchen and Halle Berry don’t exactly represent the most gorgeous of Hollywood’s glamorous ladies. What about Keira Knightley and Carrie Underwood? Not to mention the often under-appreciated, such as Jessica Alba and Charlize Theron?
Regardless, this time, I think Angelina owes a lot of her fame to her live-in boyfriend (that’s Brad again). For one, she has a lot more mainstream appeal, with her big and beautiful family, than she did in the Billy Bob days. She’s done some respectable movies lately and has garnered some critical acclaim. She’s gained a lot of respect with her humanitarian work. But, really, how many magazine covers has she landed because of the (blown way out of proportion) Angie-Jen feud? And Shiloh and the twins are arguably as famous as she is. Between the in-vitro rumors and Octo-mom, it seems to me that Angelina Jolie is more a publicity spectacle than a legitimate actress.
Some people hail Angelina as the first do-it-all Hollywood woman, being a girlfriend and mom and career woman, but anyone who makes millions and millions every year could afford that, too. And I don’t care how beautiful you are, if you’re more famous for your ridiculous (good or bad) looks and behaviors than for the talents that made you famous in the first place, I don’t have much respect for that. I propose a re-vote, and this time lets choose a beautiful, healthy woman who really deserves the attention.
