Week 24: Six-month checkup
As impossible as this seems, we are just about halfway through the year 2015. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Each year goes by more quickly than the one before.
I look at my calendar and think, ‘WHERE has the time gone?’ But then I look again and see everything I have been up to, and it makes sense. My life is rather full — in the best way possible. I have had a great year so far. I have made friends and memories, I have worked hard and played hard, I have traveled and gained new experiences, and I have taken time to relax and enjoy.
Even better, I have many more things to look forward to in the next six months (so stay tuned).
All that said, I think it’s about time I check in on the goals I set at the beginning of the year in my Week 1 post. Here goes.
The general goals:
1. Read more books: A+
I am currently on book No. 25 for the year, so I’m averaging more than a book per week, with no plans to slow down. Check and check.
2. Play more guitar: C
I started off really well on this one; I would play during my break while working from home. But after the first few months of the year, I kind of fell out of the habit. Mental note to pick this back up.
3. Scrapbook: F
I haven’t done this at all. I’ve been developing pictures, so that’s something, but the pile of things to scrapbook is just getting larger. This is a byproduct of not being home at night and it never being cold — I don’t want to sit inside and scrapbook during my free time!
4. Eat less dessert: B
I succeeded in my sugar-free January, but since then, I’ve been pretty up-and-down on this one. I usually succeed when I have a deadline by which to feel fit. I’m currently on an up and have been doing a good job cutting out sugar in advance of my beach trip. Here’s hoping I can keep that up after the trip.
5. Sleep better: A
There have been some crazy weekends and exhausting weeks, but for the most part, I have made a concerted effort to go to bed and wake up at consistent times. That has made a world of difference. I’ve come to realize I don’t need more sleep — I need regular sleep. My body does well with a solid seven or eight hours and an alarm to get me up and going at the same time every day.
6. Run better: B
The first two months of the year were rough. I had a lot of ankle pain and at one point stopped running for three weeks. But since then, I have been feeling much better, probably because I am actually taking the time to stretch and roll out my muscles like I should. Also, new shoes on a regular basis do wonders.
7. Give myself a break: A
This is hard to do in the crazy travel and work weeks, but for the most part, I’ve been finding more time to let myself chill. Sometimes, this means sleeping in. Sometimes, it means letting the cleaning go another day. Sometimes, it means not making any plans. Sometimes (OK often — see No. 1), it means spending the morning on the couch with a book.
8. Blog weekly: A
I skipped a few weeks here and there, but only when I was traveling. I say that’s perfectly acceptable.
The specific goals:
1. Get a promotion: This hasn’t happened, but I did get a raise, and all my reviews and conversations have been very positive. I’m still optimistic this will happen before the calendar turns to 2016.
2. Save $8,000: I’m not entirely sure how, but I have already done this! So that’s awesome.
3. Travel to four new cities: I have already been to Las Vegas and Santa Barbara, and I have plans to go to San Diego, Palm Desert and Santa Fe. That makes five!
4. Run three races: I did the L.A. Color Run this past weekend, and I am going to do the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon in October and the Santa Monica Christmas Run in December, so I just need to keep up my training and stay healthy!
Wish me luck as I continue trying to meet/sustain/exceed these goals!
Currently reading: A Movable Feast by Ernest Hemingway
Currently watching: The Mindy Project, season 1
Song of the week: The Eagles’ “Already Gone” (I’ve been on a major oldies kick lately)
Plans for the weekend: Not too much as of now. The weather is finally back to California normal, so I’m hoping to hit the beach, spend some time with friends, go out on Friday and maybe go for a hike. Next week I head to the Outer Banks for a few days.
