Week 7: Tales of a TV glutton
I have never been someone who watched a lot of TV. In fact, for a long time, I wasn’t someone who watched any TV at all.
In high school, I occasionally watched Survivor or The Apprentice or American Idol with my mom. In college, I watched FRIENDS on DVD because I was the only girl on my floor who hadn’t seen it. Then I started watching How I Met Your Mother, first catching up and then live. So that was a commitment of about 30 minutes a week, plus some DVD watching.
Then life after college happened. I lived by myself, I didn’t have homework, and I had a DVR — all for the first time in my life. I finally got around to watching shows I’d been hearing about. And then I started adding to my list of shows based on what I read or heard.
And now? Let’s see.
I watch About a Boy, Marry Me, Agent Carter, Modern Family, Suits, The Americans, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Brooklyn 99 and SNL. I’ll watch The Good Wife, Orphan Black and Masters of Sex once they’re back on. And in the past few months, I’ve watched all or almost all of Breaking Bad, Gilmore Girls and White Collar on Netflix.
Holy cow, that’s a lot of television. I’m almost — no, I really am — embarrassed to admit that.
But before you judge me a lazy, useless couch potato with far too much free time, know this: I am never solely watching TV.
I’m always doing something else while I watch. I have the TV on while I work from home (that’s 16 hours a week right there), while I cook, while I work out, while I clean, while I pack, while I paint my nails, while I browse magazines. You get the picture. I am a chronic multitasker, and TV has become my go-to multitask. Maybe that makes watching 13 shows a week OK?
In case you’re wondering, my quite excessive TV watching has not come at the expense of the rest of my pop culture consumption. I still read books like they’re going out of style. I still subscribe to 11 different magazines. I still keep up on a wide range of music. I still see a lot of movies.
And, much more importantly, I am not unemployed, not an antisocial hermit and not sedentary 22 hours a day. Quite the opposite: I’m constantly on the go. I work about 50 hours a week, I spend a lot of time with friends and family, I’m outside as much as possible, I go out pretty much every weekend, and I work out once or twice almost every day.
So how am I fitting all these things into my days? I really have no idea.
But I’ll figure that out later. I have a show to watch.
Currently reading: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (never read it!)
Currently watching: Gilmore Girls, season 7
Song of the week: Ella Henderson’s “Ghost”
Plans for the week: Not much. Go out Friday night? Beach Saturday? Definitely watch the Oscars on Sunday.
